Chanson (French for "song") qualifies most French-language singers/songwriters who cannot be considered pop, rock or whatever and for whom the quality of the text is essential and where the rhythm of the music follows that of the text.
Chanson can also refer to French-language singing from Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, and even sometimes Africa.
